Vickie Byron is an artist who paints the geometric understructures of New York City’s subways and bridges, embedding text into the painted architecture of the city in an expression of its culture and social history. Inspired by graffiti and views from the elevated J train between Brooklyn and Queens, this series explores movement and stillness with fast rails and ever-waiting figures. Byron lays down tracks in her compositions, arranging the city’s lines into spiraling patterns and diagonal sequences, a study of rhythm and visual speed. The geometric regularity of steel girders, and the intervals between them, explore the way our eyes are conditioned to read boxes of information in a narrative fashion, similar to a filmstrip. Observed from above and below, cyclical columns rotate continually, while fences stop the motion and keep us in place. Stage-like subway platforms are viewed behind painted frames which refer to the physical act of making a painting and the theatrical arranging of elements on a stage or canvas. In these paintings of specific neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, Byron combines modern and classical architecture, subway tracks, and wordplay with fast moving compositions to portray time, transition, and isolation, documenting a 21st-century city in flux. The exhibition is from January 12, 2024 through March 24, 2024, and is visible 24 hours daily from the street. 4 Elements Studio Satellite Gallery is located at 131 Genesee Street, Utica, NY.
